Hail storm in Mullativu

Colombo (News1st) - The Department of Meteorology warns that fairly strong and gusty winds of up to 40-50kmph can be expected in the Hambantota and Matale districts. Sea areas extending from Puttalam to Pothuvil via Negombo, Galle and Hambantota can be rough at times as winds speeds could increase up to 50-60 kmph. The met department warns naval and fishing communities to remain vigilant when setting out to sea. Meanwhile, residents of Wattuwagal and Selvapuram in Mullaitivu had to face an unexpected weather phenomenon yesterday as the areas were affected by a hail storm. According to our correspondent in the area, the hail storm was experienced at around 3 and 4pm yesterday (Aug 2nd). Residents of the Ampara district had to deal with gale force winds that blew through the area yesterday. Area residents speaking to News1st stated that the winds were so intense that it blew the roofs off some houses. District Secretary of Ampara Thusitha P. Wanigasinghe noted that the villages of Navagampura, Saddathissapura, Jayawardenepura and Harangawa were affected by the gale force winds. According to the Disaster Management Center around 217 houses sustained damages as a result of the strong winds.
