COLOMBO (News 1st) – A group of 50 students continuing to remain at the premises of the Peradeniya University despite steps being taken by the University Administration to close down the University for two months.
The students have been informed to vacate the university premises on several occasions, however, despite repeated requests, the students continue to remain at the premises.
The president of the University’s engineering faculty student union vowed to continue to remain at the premises and carry forward their struggle which has entered its 34th day.
What is the objective of this struggle? It is to allow a group of engineering faculty students to sit for the upcoming exam, they had been disqualified from sitting for the exam as they failed to meet the 80% attendance required.
Vice Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya Professor Upul B Dissanayake said that since this is an academic issue, it would be beyond the traditional and legal framework for the vice-chancellor to intervene in it. He added that they are looking into steps that can be taken to remove the students who are remaining on the premises illegally.
