Chilaw-Colombo bus employees launch strike against assault on bus driver

COLOMBO (News 1st) - Private bus employees operating on the Chilaw - Colombo route launched a strike action opposing an assault carried out on a bus driver. Chairman of Chillaw Passenger Transport Services Pvt. Ltd Chaminda Hansa said several long-distance bus employees had assaulted the driver in Colombo at around 11 pm yesterday (July 26). The driver has been admitted to the Chilaw base hospital. Chaminda Hansa adds that conflicts between long distance and short distance bus employees have existed for a long period of time adding that the National Transportation Commision has not yet introduced proper regulations to resolve their concerns. Chairman of the National Transportation Commision, M.A.P. Hemachandra noted that he was unaware of such an assault but noted that special bus stops have been introduced for long distance buses adding that the system is working smoothly.
