STF investigates 3000 calls from inmates in Prison

COLOMBO (News 1st) - Information has come to light regarding more than 3,000 phone conversations between drug dealers and organized criminals who are in prison. The conversations also include international calls. A Senior officer at the Police STF noted that following investigations, it was revealed that certain inmates, had maintained contacts with criminals from countries like India, Dubai, Nigeria, and Pakistan. The inmates who had contacted criminals overseas are from the Galle, Welikada and Magazine Prisons. The officer further noted the Police STF will conduct further investigations regarding these phone calls. Furthermore, information has also come to light regarding prison guards who support drug dealers and organized criminals who are in prison. A spokesperson at the department noted that it has been revealed certain guards were connected to various irregularities like supplying illegal items such as mobile phones to certain inmates. The Prisons Intelligence Unit has launched a special investigation regarding six such guards, serving at Prison complexes within the Colombo district.
