Reuters – Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said France’s World Cup victory was a win for Africa, with more than a dozen of the national side’s players with African roots.
Speaking in Caracas on Monday (July 16), the Venezuelan leader said the French side looked more than an African team and called on Europe to embrace African migrants coming to the continent.
The African diaspora is a hotbed of soccer talent for Europe, with teams like France, Belgium, and Portugal with a significant number of players with African roots.
Close links between French and African football go back some 80 years.
