COLOMBO (News 1st) - Minister of Megapolis and Western Development Patali Champika Ranawaka believes that calls for the implementation of the death penalty provides a clear indication that the 3 institutions that are entrusted with upholding law and order have failed. While noting that different countries can have varying opinions on the implementation of capital punishment it is eventually up to us to decide what path we must follow and what steps are needed to control the situation in the country. The minister believes that the drug trade has no support from Government at present and expressed confidence that they will be able to crack down on these criminals if the Police, Judiciary and Prisons sector works together. The Minister expressed these views following an event held to sign a MoU on installing high tech security devices for the protection of urban cities in Sri Lanka on Monday (July 16).
