COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Government Medical Officers Association has once again announced plans for an islandwide strike, claiming that the government has failed to resolve the problems faced by doctors within the Health sector. Issuing a statement, the GMOA said that while authorities including the President had been informed already of these issues, that they are yet to receive a favourable response. The GMOA claims that the government has failed to provide a positive response regarding 11 issues including the wages and allowances due to doctors, the harmful impact of the new Inland Revenue Act on doctors, the impact of the Free Trade Agreement with Singapore on Sri Lanka's employment market, and the deliberate delay of elections for vacant positions in the Sri Lankan Medical Council. The GMOA says that an emergency meeting of its executive committee will be held next week to decide on a future course of action.
