COLOMBO (News 1st) – The bodies of three of the four people who drowned after their ferry capsized on the Ekgaloya in Damana, Ampara, were recovered this evening. (July 8)
The incident occurred at about 6:30 this morning and involved a group of students and parents from the Siri Seevali Vidyalaya in Kadana, Badulla, who were on a leisure trip to Ampara.
The three bodies were recovered this evening about 200 meters from the bank of the reservoir. The deceased has been identified as 13-year-old Charuka Vidarshana, a student at the Siri Seevali Vidyalaya, M.K. Chandima, who served as an Art Teacher at the school and B.K. Amarasuriya, the school’s principal.
The Vice Principal of the Siri Seevali Maha Vidyalaya, Badulla, W.A. Ranjith said that once a year the welfare society organizes a trip and although there was a delay this year since they were able to go that everyone was happy. He also added that they had been staying at the Ekgaoya Circuit Bungalow in Ampara.
