Stern verdict against corrupt state official

Colombo (News1st) : Colombo high Court judge Gihan Kulathunga on friday (July 6th) sentenced a person found guilty of 8 indictments including soliciting a bribe of 10,000 rupees from a private bus owner. He was sentenced to 40 years of rigorous imprisonment to be served in 5 years. The case was filed by the Bribery Commission against the defendant for soliciting a bribe from a private bus owner on the 12th of October 2015 while he was serving as the operations manager at the Western Provincial passenger transport authority. In addition to the sentence of imprisonment for 5 year, he was also ordered to pay a compensation of 5 hundred thousand rupees to the private bus owner. An addition 2 years of rigorous imprisonment will be added to the sentence if convict fails to pay the fine. The judge also ordered the return of the bribe of 10,000 rupees and separately imposed a penalty of 40,000 rupees.
