2nd biggest bank robbery in Sri Lanka

Colombo (News1st) : A daring bank robbery was reported from Thalawa, Anuradhapura where the thieves had made off with cash and jewelry worth 95 million rupees. Police suspect the theft was carried out on either Saturday or Sunday while the bank was closed. Police say the thieves had used a gas powered metal cutting device to break into the bank through the back entrance and had cleaned out 3 of the 4 safes at the premises. According to our correspondent in the area, the thieves had been thorough enough to remove all hardware containing the footage from security cameras. Police dogs were used in an attempt to locate the thieves and the suspected escape route used by the robbers. Officials realized that the bank had been robbed this morning, incidentally, this particular state bank branch is located just 750 meters from the Thalawa Police Station on the Padeniya-Anuradhapura Road. According to bank workers, security guards are deployed only on working days because of the Bank's reliance on security systems such as cameras and alarms.
