COLOMBO (News 1st) – Two underworld gang members were killed in a shootout with the Police Special Task Force in the Wattegama area in Kandy. Police Media Spokesperson, SP Ruwan Gunasekara said the two victims had operated as the henchmen of two underworld gang leaders’, Madush and Angoda Lokka.
One suspect who was killed during the shootout has been identified as Rumalsha Iresh Madushanka Nawagamuwa alias “Baila”. SP Gunasekara said the duo were involved in collecting ransom money in the areas of Ranala, Athurugiriya and Homagama.
The Police Special Task Force had blocked off the Theldeniya road from the Madawala area, this afternoon, to inspect a tip off received. According to SP Gunasekara, during the inspection, the suspects who were travelling in an SUV had opened fire at officers of the Police STF.
The two of the suspects who sustained injuries during the shootout had died after being admitted to the Katugasthota hospital. The Police Media Spokesperson said a revolver and a firearm were also discovered at the scene.
Furthermore, he stated that around 11 cases including charges of murder and robbery have been filed against the two suspects.
