Fmr. DIG Nanayakkara further remanded over Wickrematunge homicide

COLOMBO (News 1st) - Former DIG Prasanna Nanayakkara, who is under arrest on charges of concealing evidence in the murder of journalist Lasantha Wickrematunge, was further remanded until May 14. The order was issued when the case was taken up before Mount Lavinia Chief Magistrate Mohammed Mihail, today (May 1). The Former DIG's attorney presented facts to court on April 23 requesting for bail to be granted to his client, and a verdict in this regard was to be delivered today (May 1). Senior State Counsel Janaka Bandara presented facts against the bail request for Former DIG Prasanna Nanayakkara. President's Counsel Anura Medagama, appearing on behalf of Former DIG Prasanna Nanayakkara, requested time to respond to the facts presented by the Senior State Counsel. Thereby, with the consent of both parties, the hearing was postponed to May 14. Another suspect in custody over the case, Inspector Thissa Sugathapala, was also further remanded until May 14.
