Officials linked to Welikada prison riot further remanded

COLOMBO (News 1st) - Colombo Additional Magistrate, Ranga Dissanayake issued an order today (April 24) to further remand Prisons Commissioner, Emil Ranjan Lamahewa and Inspector Neomal Rangajeewa of the Police Narcotics Bureau till the 8th of May. The duo were arrested for their suspected involvement in the 2012 Welikada Prison riots which killed 27 inmates. The Additional Magistrate called on the Welikada Prison Superintendent, to take relevant steps to provide necessary medical treatment for the suspects, as it has been revealed that they were suffering from depression, through medical reports regarding their mental health. Additional Magistrate, Dissanayake also ordered the Criminal Investigations Department, to carry out investigations with regard to any individual connected to the murder of the 27 inmates at the Welikada Prison, as it has been revealed through the postmortem examinations of the victims, that the attack was carried out with the intention of murder.
