COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Asian Koel is singing and Sri Lankans are eagerly preparing for the dawn of Sinhala and Tamil New Year. With hours to go, Sinhalese and Tamil households across the country are no doubt busy preparing the traditional meals, new clothes and all nitty-gritty requirements for the occasion. If you are one of those who are looking up the nekath kalaya (auspicious times) online, here you go;

Sinhala and Tamil New Year dawn: 08:13 am, 14th of April.

Punya Kalaya: from 01:49 am to 02:37 pm.

Lighting of the hearth and cooking meals: 10:40 am.

Milk rice with jaggery should be prepared, facing North, while clad in blue colored clothing.

Transactions and partaking of the first meal: 11:43 am, facing North, clad in blue and white attire.

Wish the President

The President's Media Division has announced that the General Public will be given an opportunity to wish the President for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year. "The President is prepared to perform the new year rituals and traditions at his official residence located down Mahagamasekara Mawatha in Colombo tomorrow", read the statement from the President's Media Division.
