Eight Cameroonian athletes have gone missing from their accommodation at the Commonwealth Games in Australia.
Commonwealth officials have informed the Australian police about the "desertion" and authorities have warned the athletes about overstaying. The Cameroon officials confirm the athletes have valid Australian visas until 15 May. They also said they are very disappointed with the situation as some of the athletes have not even taken part in the games.
The missing athletes were last seen on Monday and Tuesday, Weightlifters Olivier Matam Matam, Arcangeline Fouodji Sonkbou, Petit Minkoumba ; boxers, Christian Ndzie Tsoye, Simplice Fotsala, Arsene Fokou, Ulrich Yombo and Christelle Ndiang are among the deserters.
The Commonwealth Games Federation has stated the athletes would be monitored, however they have the right to travel freely. Cameroon has a history of athletes disappearing at major athletic games, in 2012 seven Cameroonian athletes disappeared during the London Olympic Games.
