Matthew Abeysinghe sets another Sri Lankan record

COLOMBO (News 1st) - A number of  Sri Lankan swimmers took part in several swimming events at the day 5 (April 9) of the Gold Coast 2 Commonwealth Games today (April 9). Competing in the 1st round of the Men's 50-meter freestyle individual heats, Matthew Abeysinghe qualified to the semi-finals renewing his own Sri Lankan record clocking  22.65 seconds. The achievement goes into record books as the first time a Sri Lankan swimmer finished the 50m Men's free style in less than in 23 seconds. Mathew swam in the semi-finals of the Men's 50m freestyle but failed to advance to the finals. Earlier, Matthew also renewed his own Sri record in 100-meter freestyle clocking 49.11 seconds in Individual Heats. Mathew, swam under 50 sec on four instances during the past two days to impress the Sri Lankan sports loving fraternity. Mathew accomplished a similar feat in 2013 to set the Sri Lanka record (49.98sec) as a junior.
