Investigations under way on hundreds of Facebook accounts

COLOMBO (News 1st) - According to the latest reports received from the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission, several Facebook accounts are to be investigated for being involved in spreading false information during the unrest period of the country. The Cyber Crimes Unit of Telecommunications Regulatory Commission has identified 186 different Facebook accounts in connection with the incident. The Commission further reports that several individuals are being identified on suspicion of spreading false information through various social media platforms. The authorities are to be paid special attention to the fact that how social media platforms should be allowed to use within the legal framework of the country going forward. The government has already begun discussions with Facebook with regards to the investigations. China and Germany have agreed to assist with the investigations and provide technical support to avoid the misuse of Facebook in a similar manner in future. Investigations have also been launched into several accounts linked to Whatsapp which were involved in spreading false information.
