COLOMBO (News 1st): The Campaign for Free and Fair Elections or CaFFE convened a media briefing today, Tuesday, February 27.

Speaking at the media briefing, Executive Director of CaFFE, Keerthi Tennakoon stated that it has been 24 years since Ranil Wickremesinghe became the Leader of the United National Party in November 1994.

He further stated that generally, the time span of a generation is 20 years and after these 20 years, it should be called the second generation.

Presidents during Ranil’s reign according to Keerthi Tennakoon:

  1. D.B. Wijetunge
  2. Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga – two terms
  3. Mahinda Rajapaksa – two terms
  4. Maithripala Sirisena – with the support of UNP

Tennakoon further stated that the United National Party has not changed a bit but the country has seen four presidents.

“ Ranil Wickremesinghe sits on the same chair in the United National Party, and it is exactly where it was. So you can expect nothing else but internal issues and a lack of democracy from within the party, ”  said Executive Director of CaFFE, Keerthi Tennakoon

Keerthi Tennakoon further pointed out that this is the reason for the deteriorating state of the country today.

Furthermore, he stated that having made the statement those in the elections operations office in Sirikotha have addressed a letter to the Election Commission accusing the election observers as being biased.

“This is what they are doing. They do not have a single idea about the country’s politics,” said Keerthi Tennakoon.
