The Supreme Court of the Maldives on Thursday, February 1, ordered the immediate release of Former President Mohamed Nasheed and eight other opposition leaders, stating their trials had violated the constitution and international law. But it also ordered new trials.
According to the Supreme Court, it found that prosecutors and judges had been unduly influenced “to conduct politically motivated investigations” into the allegations levelled at Nasheed, and the other opposition leaders who had challenged President Abdulla Yameen.
Speaking exclusively to News1st Former President Mohamed Nasheed expressed his views on the supreme court ruling.
