Rehearsals are currently underway for the 70th Independence Day celebrations at the Galle Face Green.

According to the Police HQ, the stretch from the Galle Face Roundabout to the Old Parliament Roundabout will be closed from 7 am to noon until Saturday, February 3rd.

While the Independence day is one to celebrate, the morning rush-hour commuters were all but celebrating today (February 1).

This was because of the severe traffic congestion created as a result of these rehearsals. This meant most people reported to work.., quite late.

Vehicular movement on several roads around the Galle-face area were at a standstill.

Vehicular movements were on snail pace in areas around galle-face, including;

  • 138 bus route
  • Lipton Circus
  • Park Street
  • The road along Viharamahadevi Park
  • Colpetty
  • Bambalapitiya
  • Piththala Junction

Double standards?

The government condemns the difficulties caused to the general public through trade union actions, be it in the health sector or the transportation sector.

However, isn’t this congestion, which is ‘sponsored by the government’, a major hindrance to the public like the rest?

Clearly this traffic situation could’ve been eased if the rehearsals were conducted after 9 am.

The People’s Voices

“We go to work with so many problems. We spend half the time on the road. We work 8 hours a day and spend 10 hours on the road. This is ridiculous.”

“They say freedom, but we have been deprived of freedom. You can see it for yourself.”

“We cannot even go to work. All the people here want to get to their jobs.”

“This traffic is unbelievable. This is the result of poor planning. There is no one from the Police. People are traveling however they want.”

The Independence Day rehearsals will continue tomorrow (Friday) during the same hours.
