The Attorney General’s department is to begin filing charges after thoroughly examining the Bond Commission report evidence, said AG Jayantha Jayasuriya.
AG Jayasuriya told News 1st that, if Arjuna Mahendran has been involved in a criminal activity, action can be taken against the former CBSL Governor under Sri Lankan laws, though he is a foreign national.
“Existing laws in Sri Lanka are sufficient to arrest former Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran.” – AG told the Ceylon Today newspaper.
However, the AG told News 1st that charges cannot be filed in relation to the bond scam, based solely on the presidential commission report.
According to AG Jayasuriya, the department has begun reviewing the verbal and written evidence recorded by the bond commission.
Report of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry to Investigate and Inquire into Serious Acts of Fraud and Corruption (PRESIFAC), has implicated a number of former ministers and other politicians, said Presidential Secretary Austin Fernando.
According to Fernando, the commission headed by Court of Appeal President Justice Preethi Padman Surasena had handed over their reports to the president on two separate occasions.
Presidential Secretary told News 1st that the relevant reports have been forwarded to the Attorney General’s department and the bribery commission, in order to initiate legal action.
