China is known as the world’s largest importer and end user of elephant tusks but, ivory sales and demand have fallen since early 2014 because of a crackdown on corruption and slower economic growth.

The ban takes effect on Sunday, January 5, with wildlife activists calling it a vital step to reducing the slaughter of the endangered animals.

Many awareness campaigns featuring celebrities have been held to help boost awareness of the cost of ivory.

According to wildlife groups, an estimate of 30,000 elephants are killed by poachers in Africa each year.

“It is the greatest single step toward reducing elephant poaching.” says Peter Knights, Chief Executive of the group WildAid.
