The Department of Meteorology has issued a ‘Red Alert‘ regarding the weather forecast for the next 24 hours. According to the notice issued, the low pressure area in the vicinity of Sri Lanka has now developed into a depression.
The red notice says the depression is expected to develop further and move away from the island along the southern coast.The Met Department warns of heavy rain and gusty strong winds (of around 60-70 kph) over Sri Lanka.
Very heavy rains (above 150 mm) have been predicted for the following provinces
The Met Dept. expects heavy rain above 100 mm in other areas.
The department has predicted very heavy rain, accompanied by strong winds and rough seas in the deep and shallow sea around Sri Lanka, especially in the Western and Southern coast.
According to the Met Department, wind speeds can increase up to 70-80 kph at times.
Naval and fishing communities asked to refrain from naval activities around the country.
