News 1st sent out a message to Thilanga Sumathipala, the President of Sri Lanka Cricket via our TV news bulletins and our website yesterday (October 23).

If you missed it, read it here: Message from News 1st to Thilanga Sumathipala: let professionals handle the sport

Mr. Sumathipala responded to our message today (October 24).

“This is the best XI out of the 20 players we select that takes the field. I ask the media, if you can, write down a list of 11 names and make a team. I call on all media to give me 11 names if you can find them. No, there isn’t. We have a good selection committee. I admit my responsibility.”

When the News 1st Journalist who visited Mr. Sumathipala reminded him that we had no personal dispute with him, Thilanga Sumathipala replied that it did become personal.

“This is not the people who are saying this.” said Mr. Sumathipala.

“When a journalist comes and says Sumathipala should resign, he is a journalist representing a certain group with an agenda.”

Dear Mr. Sumathipala, lets take a trip down memory lane, shall we?

The notion that the current downfall and massive draw back of Sri Lanka Cricket is caused by its administrators, is not the personal opinion of News 1st.

It is the opinion of the general public of Sri Lanka. And the statement was based on just that.

Take a few minutes off your schedule to browse through social media, and you would see that for yourself.

You reminded us that you were ‘elected’ to this position.

We have not forgotten that. We know you were elected.

But how did you get the votes? – the officials know how you used your money, privileges and went on overseas trips to win this election.

This is not something we said, it was published in newspapers at the time.

We would also like to remind you Mr. Sumathipala, that you are not an elected public representative.

You were selected to Parliament through the National List.

Also remember that you are criticizing our media institution and its journalists as the Deputy Speaker of Parliament and the President of Sri Lanka Cricket.

Do you recall what happened last year?

Do you remember what happened when Sri Lanka whitewashed visiting Australia 3-0 in the test series?

Do you remember what happened when Sri Lanka claimed a series win in the T20I in Australia?

The moment we clinched these victories, the administrators were quick to come before the cameras and say that our players are talented.

Finally, it is the administrator that should be held accountable for the downfall of cricket in Sri Lanka- The game, which is our pride & joy.

So without passing the buck on to our media station, its journalists or anyone else for that matter…

Please step down from your position.

Take family politics away from cricket.
It cannot be the Ranatunga family, the Dharmadasa family or the Sumathipala family.

Let the professionals handle the sport.

That… is our plea.
