The Railways Department has requested all retired railway guards and drivers, who are currently rendering their service under a contract basis, to report for work, in the absence of those engaging in the strike action.

According to the General Manager of Railways, S. M. Abeywardhana, all retired railway guards and drivers have been requested to report to work by 12 noon today.

Train travel across the country has come to a stand still, leaving commuters destitute since last evening.

The Railway Drivers and Guards Association said the strike will continue to be in effect until proper solutions are meted out for their demands.
