The world famous Condé Nast Traveller website recently featured the Mattala International Airport.
Though you think that is good news, sadly, it is the opposite.
Condé Nast Traveller reports that the $200 million airport sees an average of around 7 passengers a day.
By 2016 the airport was entertaining two aircraft a week, while this figure has dropped to a single airline operator by today.
The website has dubbed the MRIA as the ‘World’s least busy Airport’ where nobody would run into any que.
Over 100 million people pour through Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International every year. This is the busiest airport in the world.
Each day more than 260,000 people fly out of Beijing Capital International Airport, the second busiest.
The Mattala airport was built with 12 check-in counters and 110,000 square feet of terminal space built to accommodate one million passengers.
While such an expensive infrastructure project wastes away, the supporting infrastructure built for the airport is also being wasted away.
Around 1000 lamp posts which line the road leading to the Mattala Intentional Airport have been looted by thieves.
“.. they have stripped these posts of all the wires. there is no protection, the thieves have taken everything away..” – Area Resident
The RDA estimates that they have suffered losses worth 17 million ruppees due to the thefts.
While plans for the future of the world’s emptiest airport are uncertain, the staff will continue to busy itself with tasks like chasing elephants off the runway.
