Former Presidential Secretary Lalith Weeratunga and Former Chairman of the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission, Anusha Palpita have been granted bail by the Colombo High Court.

The duo were earlier imprisoned in connection to the usage of Rs. 600 million worth of TRCSL funds to purchase Sil Cloths during the presidential election season.

Thereby, they  have been released on:

  • Cash bail – Rs. 100,000
  • Three sureties – 1 million each

The sureties should include one government servant and a close relative, who should be residents of the Colombo High Court jurisdiction area.

Lalith Weeratunga and Anusha Palpita have also been ordered to hand over their passports to court.

The two were supposed to serve three years in prison. According to President’s counsel Kalinga Indatissa, it’s unlikely that the appeal filed in the Court of Appeal would end within those three years.

Also the Attorney General’s department has no opposition to the court granting bail.
