Minister of Foreign Affairs Ravi Karunanayake, making a special statement in parliament, announced that he is resigning from the post of minister.

In his statement, MP Ravi Karunanayake said that he has no requirement to obtain a home in any illegal manner, adding that he had never earned money illegally either.

He added that earlier not a single minister was called to appear before any commission; however, he appeared before the Presidential Commission and provided evidence.

He further said that he dedicated all his personal time and his aims for the benefit of the country.

Ravi Karunanayake also said that he used his ministry to serve the public, adding that his phone line is open 24 hours a day.

He added that positions are temporary; what is permanent is the public service rendered, further stating that there is a conspiracy to destabilise the government of good governance.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe also expressed views following MP Karunanayake’s statement. He said the letter of resignation of Ravi Karunanayake was handed over on Wednesday after meeting with the President.

The Prime Minister also said that Ravi Karunanayake set an example to show that the government will not intervene with the proceedings of the Commission.

Premier Wickremesinghe further said that for ten years, this was never done. Lasantha Wickrematunge was assassinated; Eknaligoda was kidnapped.

He also said that Ravi Karunanayake did not request an interim order from courts; instead he stepped down from his position: This is the difference of good governance, he added.

Prime Minister Wickremesinghe further said ”we are proud that we created a new trend in this parliament.”
