A decision has been made to allocate a lane only for the operation of buses from Battaramulla to Borella.
Chairman of the Urban Development Authority, Dr. Jagath Munasinghe said that the decision was made following the success of the pilot project to allocate a separate lane for buses, that was implemented in Rajagiriya for a period of one  between March 12 – 19.
The pilot project was conceived as a way to reduce the heavy traffic congestion in Colombo. Recent data has shown that over 150 buses move toward Colombo – Fort from Battaramulla during the morning and evening rush hours everyday.
It has been observed that due to construction of the flyover in Rajagiriya, the flow of traffic has become severely restricted, especially from 7 a.m. – 9 a.m. and after 4:30 p.m.
Dr. Munasinghe also said that accordingly, buses will operate only on one lane from Battaramulla to Borella, adding that this measure will also be implemented in several other roads. He added that the additional cost spent on buses operating on the allocated lane will be incurred by the government.
Dr. Munasinghe further noted that, through the new procedure, plans are being made to encourage the use of public transportation among people who travel in private vehicles.
