Three hot air balloons carrying tourists have crash landed in Turkey injuring at least 40 people.

The incident occurred at a tourist hotspot in the region of Cappadocia, famous for its surreal landscape of sandstone caves and volcanic peaks. Local media reported that the balloons were brought down by strong winds  and rain, causing them to drift out of control. The pilots of the three vessels were forced to make an emergency landing near the village of Sofular.

Chinese and European tourists were among those injured. There were no fatalities reported, with most people being hospitalized for fractures and other minor injuries, while nine have suffered broken arms and legs in the fall.

Cappadocia’s unusual rock formations make it one of the best places in the world for hot air ballooning. One website offering hot air balloon tours of Cappadocia, which has not been confirmed as involved in today’s crash, says on it website: “Cappadocia is a landscape that you will have never witnessed before in your lifetime.
