From violent protests to assaults- Bingiriya Police responds

A person who was arrested by Bingiriya Police in connection to an accident, which claimed a life, was  released on bail on March 6.

The act sparked immediate outrage, with people protesting outside the Police Station within the course of the day. However, the protest allegedly turned violent, with the protesters causing damages to the station, a Police SUV and the Station name-board.

Nine of the protesters have been arrested by the police under the charges of ‘acting in an unruly manner’ and ‘causing damage to public property’.

The arrested are to be produced before the Hettipola Court today.

Meanwhile in Padukka, a police officer who was on duty at the Meepe Police Post has been admitted to the Homagama hospital following an assault carried out by a group of individuals.

According to the police, the assault took place while the officer was recording a complaint from an individual. The group had assaulted the person who was lodging the complaint, and the officer was targeted after trying to prevent the assault.

Three suspects have been arrested and are to be produced before the Homagama Magistrate’s court today, Tuesday, March 7..
