Addressing a letter to the President, Leader of the Opposition R. Sampanthan has requested that lands occupied by the military in the Northern Province be released as soon as possible.

The Opposition Leader’s letter comes against a backdrop where protests are being staged by residents of Walikamam North in Jaffna and Kepapilavu in Mullaitivu, demanding the return of their lands.

In the letter, Opposition Leader R. Sampanthan says, the military has been occupying the lands in Walikamam North for almost twenty-five years.The letter reads that it is unfair to continue to occupy these lands which were taken over from the people to establish army camps at a time when threats from the LTTE prevailed.

On the other hand, the Leader of the Opposition says the lands belonging to the people of Kepapilavu in Mullaitivu has been occupied by the military for the past eight years.

Sampanthan further states, the military’s continued occupation of lands owned by the people, is in violation of the laws of the country.

The Opposition Leader urges the President to take steps to restore these lands to the people at the earliest.
