Police hunt for gunman in Batticaloa LRC director shooting

Authorities are yet to make an arrest in connection to the shooting of the Batticaloa District Director of the Land Reforms Commission, Nesakumar Wimalraj.

Police Spokesperson DIG Priyantha Jayakody said statements had been recorded from 22 persons in connection to the shooting.

HospitalTaking in to account the safety of Batticaloa District Director of the Land Reforms Commission, Nesakumar Wimalraj, who was shot at on Wednesday , he has been moved to Colombo where he is being treated at a private hospital under police protection.

“… He is a representative of the LRC, and he was shot at. We still have not been able to locate the shooter. Taking his safety into consideration we have moved him to a private hospital in Colombo. His condition is not serious. He is being treated and will recover soon. I am disappointed that such events continue to take place …”  said Minister of Tourism Development, Christian Religious Affairs and Lands,John Amaratunga.

Police Media Spokesperson DIG Priyantha Jayakody said the CID has also commenced investigations in to the shooting.

In addition five police teams supervised by the Batticaloa Superintendent of Police have also commenced investigations. Special police protection has also been provided to the residence of the Batticaloa District Director of the Land Reforms Commission.

Chairman of the Land Reforms Commission Sumanatissa Thambugala said that a decision has been reached to provide special protection to all LRC lands in the Batticaloa District and a request in this regard has been submitted to the police.

Nesakumar Wimalraj was shot at on Wednesday night, while he was at his house in Kaluwanchikudy.An unidentified gunman in a motorcycle had opened fire at him and then fled. Wimalraj was initially admitted to the Batticaloa Hospital.His name came to the spotlight as he was against the forceful acquisition of state lands in Eravur , Batticaloa.

protest Locals from Kaluwanchikudy demonstrated today, condemning the attack on Nesakumar Wimalraj. The demonstration took place close to the Rasa-Manikkam Statue in Kaluwanchikudy town.
