The Attorney-at-Law representing the Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government informed the Supreme Court on January 30 that the Delimitation Committee report on the postponed local government election will be gazetted within a month.
This was after taking into consideration a Fundamental Rights Petition filed by Rohana Hettiarachchi, the Executive Director of the People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) requesting for an order to be issued to conduct the local government election immediately.
The petition was taken up before a three-judge bench comprising of Justices Priyasad Depp, Upali Abeyratne and Nalin Perera.
The case will be taken up again on March 13.
Meanwhile, four suspects who were remanded in connection to a demonstration held at the Hambantota Investment Zone recently were granted bail on January 30.
Bail was granted after the suspects were presented at the Hambantota Magistrate’s Court.
The other suspects who were also arrested in connection to the incident have been remanded once again until February 13.
A further ten suspects who were arrested and then granted bail were also presented in court on January 30.
