Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne speaking on the controversial Central Bank Bond issue, pointed out that the loss through the bond transaction was Rs.10 Bn . He added that COPE has brought charges that the previous government caused a loss of Rs 330 Bn.
“D.E.W Gunasekara was the chairman of COPE at the time. When he was not available I sat in as the chairman. Even though we were ministers of that government we revealed everything. We did not keep our mouths shut, we revealed the mistakes. Remember that we did not hide anything”, he said.
He further charged that investigation are done in ‘two ways’presently however during the past it was not even looked at
“At present when there is a mistake we investigate it. We investigate in two ways. Those days they didn’t even look at it once. That is the difference”, he said.
He also spoke of media freedom during the past administration and that all the media channels -except ‘Sirasa’ – spoke on behalf of the Mahinda Rajapaksa government
According to the minister, a 60mn overdraft was obtained from the president’s brother in order to publish the first set of notices.
[quote]”There were no millionaires or billionaires in the country to give us money. They went to the Temple trees with the money bundled up in sacks. Usually, when you speak of the UNP it is referred to as the millionaires party. Now there is not one for that party.”[/quote]
He further said that some ministers have forgotten about the businessmen who did business with Mahinda Rajapaksa while some are trying to do business with the same people.
“That is the mistake. None of them were there for us”, he said.
