Two letters seeking clarification on former CBSL Governor Arjuna Mahendran has been sent to the current CBSL Governor and Ministry of Finance Secretary.
Arjuna Mahendran has been at the centre of the Central Bank Bond controversy. The letter, sent by the Voice Against Corruption, seeks clarification on Mahendran being appointed to review and monitor subjects at a meeting held with the participation of the Ministry of Finance.
The Anti-Corruption Front sent a letter to the MoF Secretary – titled “Newspaper Report on Arjuna Mahendran”.
The letter points out an instance where the former CBSL governor attended an event on November 1, 2016, held under the auspices Ravi Karunanayake. Mahendran was removed from his position of CBSL governor by President at the time.
The movement levelled charges that Mahendran has been given responsibilities to;
– Review and advising on matters pertaining to Bank lending
– Report growth of each bank
– Increase capital base
– Budget proposal on portfolio lending
– Consumer lending
The letter also raises the question – “Who authorised Mahendran being given actions which should be by the Central Bank?”
The movement’s letter to the current CBSL governor bore the heading “Arjuna Mahendran to provide advice to you”
The letter has further questioned the authority of Arjuna Mahendran to advice the current governor. The Front questions the designation of Mahendran at the MoF, for him to be vested with such a responsibility.
