Colombo Chief Magistrate Lal Ranasinghe on Friday, January 20, ordered that former Deputy Minister of Fisheries Sarath Kumara Gunaratna who was in remand custody, be granted bail.
Sarath Kumara Gunaratne was granted bail on a bond of Rs. 25,000 and two sureties of one million rupees each.
The former deputy Minister was arrested and remanded on Wednesday on the charge of misusing close to twelve million rupees out of state funds allocated for the Negombo lagoon development project.
Police had filed this case against five suspects including Sarath Kumara Gunaratna.
Meanwhile, Upul Chaminda Kumarasinghe, who is the son-in-law of Sarath Kumara Gunaratna, was remanded until February 3, after he surrendered himself to court.
Kumarasinghe served as Sarath Kumara Gunaratne’s private secretary, during the period in which the latter served office as a deputy minister.
