Gammadda teams visited the districts of Puttalam, Badulla and Mannar Districts today under phase two of the Gammadda door-to-door initiative.

The Gammadda team visiting the Puttalam district met with and inquired into the well being of fisheries communities in villages including Kurukkapanai, Arachchikattuwa and Nagul-Eliya in Chilaw.

Forty-eight-year old Terrence Perera, a resident of Kurukkapanai, lost a foot during the war. Like his neighbours, Terrence too is facing severe economic hardships.

A News1st team also visited the Nagul-Eliya islet and listened to the problems faced by the fisheries community. A key request voiced by the villagers was the need of a proper road to access Nagul-Eliya, via Muthupanniya.

News1st teams also met with farmers in the villages of Ailanda, Welimada-Boralanda, Gambedda and Udakendagolla in Haputale, where the inability to secure a fair price for their produce, the inefficiency of the fertiliser subsidy and the lack of a proper irrigation system are key concerns.

News1st teams also visited the villages of Thirikerivaram, Shivapuram, Chavarikkulam, Kalliadi and Ilukpakkadivei in the Mannar district.

The people of Shivapuram, who were settled here in 2008, are still languishing without proper housing. Our team also witnessed first hand, the dilapidated condition of the road used by villagers in Chavarikkulam and surrounding areas. The people are requesting that this 3 kilometer stretch of road be refurbished to ensure safety and increase economic opportunities.
