Thirty four remanded over Hambantota unrest

Thirty-four (34) people who were arrested during the unrest near the Hambantota Investment Zone have been remanded after they were produced before the Hambantota Magistrate.

The demonstrators were arrested and produced in court on charges of damaging public property during the protest.Police said that fifty-two (52) individuals had been arrested in total.

Of the individuals produced before courts today, Sunday January 8, twenty-one (21) persons were remanded until tomorrow, January 9,  while two others were remanded until the 11th.

The protest was staged against providing lands in Hambantota to Chinese Companies.

Meanwhile people living in the area where the unrest broke out, also expressed views to media.

” I was just walking along the road when the two police officers and three others may be from the S. T. F. caught me and beat me. Now my hand is broken….” said a resident who was allegedly assaulted.
