The programme of providing vehicles for 58 MPs under a operations leasing method has been temporarily suspended.
The government recently proposed to offer luxury vehicles to 58 MPs under an operational lease even at a time when MPs were provided with duty free permits to import vehicles.
Citing that the proposal was made in violation of the procurement process, the Secretary to the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs opposed the proposal.
General Secretary of the UPFA,Minister Mahinda Amaraweera added that this issue was discussed at the cabinet meeting and temporarily suspended the leasing of vehicles He added that under the previous government vehicles were provided to MPs who were in development committees. He explained that a vehicle will be provided. However, the process of getting them paying a higher lease has come to a point where it will not follow through.
