The National Force to Protect the Rights of War Veterans, commenced a hunger strike opposite the Fort Railway Station in Colombo on Monday. The group staged a demonstration opposite the Fort Railway Station on Monday morning, demanding that pensions be paid for disabled veterans of the tri-forces and the police, who have served for less than 12 years.
The group then staged a protest march to the Presidential Secretariat to hand over a letter. The protest march caused the closure of Lotus Road for about two hours.
While several demonstrators were allowed to enter the Presidential Secretariat, they noted that they were directed to the Ministry of Defence.
As a result of the authorities failing to meet their demands, the demonstrators commenced a hunger strike this evening, opposite the Fort Railway Station, blocking Olcott Mawatha.
