The OIC of the Kapitiya police has been temporarily transferred to the Puttalam police. The D.I.G in charge of the area said that transfer was made following the protest in the Kurungnanpitiya area in Kaplitiya on Friday.
Small scale fishermen in Kalpitiya who engaged in this protest refrained from setting off to sea on Saturday as well. Meanwhile, a demonstration was held before the Chilaw fish market on Saturday in protest over the illegal fishing methods being adopted. The fishermen who commenced their demonstration along the Chilaw beach, then marched up to the Chilaw Bridge.
Over 1000 fishermen from several areas, engaged in this demonstration.
Meanwhile fifteenth anniversary of the Sri Vimukthi Fisher-women Association in Negamobo was held at the Jubilee Hall of the St Mariya Church in Negombo on Saturday. Convener of the National Fisheries Solidarity Movement (NAFSO) Herman Kumara stated that the minister put in a commission or an investigation report from NARA- and on two occasions he said this report was in in favour of the small scale fishermen. Without stating that it is good and banning it, they have issued 53 more licences, he pointed out.
Views were also expressed on Friday’s protest in Kalpitiya. He added that with the licence these fishermen-businessmen, work towards the destruction of the ocean.
Six persons who were injured in fight that broke out during the protest, have been hospitalised. Police noted that protesters have set ablaze two vehicles and three boats.
Small scale fishermen commenced the protest on Thursday against the use of illegal methods in fishing. The protest obstructed vehicular movement on the Palaviya – Kalpitiya road.
A tense situation arose when another group of fishermen arrived at the location where the protest was being held and attacked the demonstrators. Police took measures to call the Special task Force to control the situation.
