No investigation has been initiated by the Sri Lanka Army into the alleged suicide of a former intelligence officer, who also allegedly wrote a letter claiming responsibility for the 2009 assassination of Lasantha Wickrematunge.

Police say that no evidence has arisen to suspect that there was foul play involved in the retired officer’s death.

Confirming the police statement, the Judicial Medical Officer has determined that Ilandaarige Edirisinghe Jayamanna, the former military intelligence officer, committed suicide by hanging himself. The medical opinion is that there were no internal or external injuries on the body.

Jayamanna’s body was found hanging inside his house in Karadupana, Kegalle on Friday, October 14.

However, several disparities arise concerning the letter left by Jayamanna. The chief among them is the fact that the individual currently in remand custody is named Prem Ananda Udalagama and not Milinda Udalagama.

Incidentally, there are certain similarities between Jayamanna and a sketch that was released by the police several months ago, of a suspect in the assassination of Lasantha Wickrematunge.

Our attempts to make inquiries from the family of the deceased today were unsuccessful as his brother, who is also reportedly a military officer, prevented us from doing so.
