A demonstration was staged on Tuesday October 11, by a group obstructing the Colombo – Negombo main road in the Ja Ela area.

It was recently reported that garbage collected at the Meetotamulla garbage dump is being relocated to Othekele, in the Madama Junction in Ekala.

Ekala residents say that Othekele is the low lying area to which water recedes to from the Gampaha, Ekala and Ja Ela areas.

Locals point out that disposing garbage at this location could cause a risk of pollution to the Aththanagalu Oya and Dandugama Oya while also causing many health hazards.

The demonstrators arrived at the Ja Ela Divisional Secretariat and handed over a letter to the Divisional Secretary and dispersed. However, they stressed on the the need for a “reasonable solution.”
