Estate workers protests continue as attempts to reach an agreement fail

Attempts made to resolve the wage issue of the estate workers has failed again.

Protest by estate workers demanding their daily pay to be increased to Rs.1000 rupees entered day 12 today. Protestors obstructed the Colombo Hatton Road from the Shannon Junction, causing heavy traffic on the Colombo Hatton and Hatton Kandy main road.

Protesters also obstructed the Hatton Nurawa Eliya Road at the Malliyappuwa Junction today.

Another demonstration at the Kuruvita Junction on the Ratnapura – Colombo Main road disrupted vehicular movement in the area on Friday morning.

A demonstration also took place at the Gas Works Junction in Colombo on Friday morning demanding the wage hike.

Workers from five estates protested on Friday morning in the Aruppana-Kanda area in Kalutara. The protest also disrupted vehicular movement. The proposal to solve issue at hand is to raise the daily wage to Rs.730 rupees. However, Estate owners and trade union have failed to reach an agreement on this proposal.
