Over 105 acres of forest have been destroyed following wild fires that erupted in Ella and Yatiyantota.
While 100 acres of land in the Ravana-Ella Forest Reserve were gutted in the blaze that erupted on the evening of Sunday, September 25, our correspondent notes that the fire was doused in a joint effort by members of the Police, the Police STF, the Badulla fire brigade, the Disaster Management Centre and the general public.
Meanwhile, five more acres of land were destroyed in a fire that erupted in Weerayagolla, Yatiyantota on Sunday evening. Police said that the fire was doused with assistance from residents.
On Saturday, the Department of Forest Conservation stated that about 4000 acres of land has been destroyed this year alone, owing to fires.
Nearly 300 acres of forests on the Mandarapitiya and Indigolla mountain ranges in Arakgama, Hanguranketha, were destroyed by wild fires on Sunday.
