Clean drinking water was only a vague dream to the people in Hambegamuwa, Thanamalwila.
Today, under the News1st Gammadda 100-Days Initiative, the dreams of these people, who suffered for years as a result of chronic kidney disease became a reality.
The Hambegamuwa Settlement, which comes under the jurisdiction of the Thanamalwila Divisional Secretariat is one where people suffer day and night due to the difficulty in obtaining cleaning drinking water.
Chronic kidney disease is rampant in the area: and clean drinking water for these residents is similar to an elixir.
Recently , the Gammadda 100 Days Initiative launched a project to end their search for clean drinking water, and within a short period of eleven days this project was vested with the public, together with the support of the Sri Lanka Navy.
This event was graced by Deputy Area Commander of the South Eastern Naval Area, Commodore S.P. Kurukulasuriya.
This water project which was constructed at the Hambegamuwa Settlement Primary School will provide clean drinking water to the school children and around 800 families in the village.
The people also joined a tree-planting programme held inline with the activities of the Gammadda initiative.
