An inmate at the Matara Prison who was sentenced to twelve years in prison five days ago, committed suicide by hanging himself on Monday, September 19.

According to the Prisons Media Spokesperson Thushara Upuldeniya, the inmate was found by jailers,  hanging in the prison toilet by  at about 7:45 a.m. on Monday and was taken to the Matara General Hospital.

The deceased, who had been convicted on charges of rape, is a resident of Matara.
