An inmate of the Matara Prison has hanged himself in the prison premises. Prisons Spokesperson Thushara Upuldeniya said that the information regarding the incident was received on Monday morning.

He added that the prisoner was convicted for a ten year imprisonment for rape. The prisoner was a resident of the Watagedara area in Matara.

He has been indicted in the year 2013.

The prisoner has hanged himself in the toilet of the prison and prison officials had admitted the individual to hospital. Our correspondent said that his remains are placed at the Matara Hospital.
