At an event to declare open an administrative building complex in the Jaffna District, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe expressed the following views.

The premier charged that when it is being said that Buddhism is in danger,  it is only an attempt to bring back racism.

“We too will have to bring in another statement to protect Buddhism”, said the premier,  who further pointed out that when Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka was to be arrested, the Maha Sangha attempted to hold a demonstration at the Maha Maluwa. And a group theros went there under the advice of the “king” and stated if it was done they will remove themselves from the Malwathu Chapter and they will create another chapter with state sponsorship and the “king” gave those theros a large amount of funds to construct various buildings.

He went on to note that a condition needs to be included to protect the Malwathu chapter, and other chapters, from individuals like this. And the other party leaders too agree with this and if the Mahanayaka theros agree, this can proceed and be arranged for.

The prime minister also elaborated on the reconciliation process stating that there is a need for a new constitutional amendment

He added that there are other steps that need to be taken – and there is a separate secretariat to create reconciliation among communities under former president Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, while steps have been taken to release people from jail who have cases against them if they are not connected to the main crime. And acts have been passed for an office on missing persons and the laws to establish a truth commission will be established.

“No one benefitted from racial problems. There are Sinhalese, Tamils Muslims and Burghers Living in the country”, he said
